Grant Dunnery

Grant is a graduate of the BA (Hons) Philosophy and Politics course, his career has taken him to Belgium and he now works in London as a European and International Regulatory Affairs Manager for The Investment Association.

I studied philosophy and politics, with a particular focus on the latter. Politics features in all of our lives and the world continues to change at a rapid and chaotic pace.

Awareness of this and an ability to navigate choppy waters is a necessity for almost all major organisations. A degree in politics provides you with a cross-sectoral skill set, providing a solid foundation.

Íæż½ã½ã's strong and growing reputation

I chose to study at Íæż½ã½ã because it was developing a strong and growing reputation. When I was applying in 2016, the University was steadily climbing the rankings. I was keen to be part of an institution that was progressing and 'going somewhere', while also offering a supportive campus environment.

Sense of community

I really enjoyed my time at Íæż½ã½ã. The relatively small number of students coupled with its distinct location just outside the city centre creates a strong sense of community. It felt close-knit and was easy to build relationships with both classmates and lecturers.

I particularly appreciated the commitment of the lecturers at the University. Their support made a real difference to my overall experience, laying the groundwork to go on and do my masters elsewhere. The combination of larger, course-wide lectures and smaller-scale seminars created a really effective learning environment.

Some of my favourite memories from my time at the University come from being involved in clubs and societies, particularly the Politics Society. The trips abroad we organised were a real highlight, a lot of fun and a great way to meet with others who shared interests.

My advice to students

Have faith that you will get the break you’re looking for. The graduate job market is tough but you will get there.

Make sure you take full advantage of the University’s excellent careers support services. They can provide valuable help with developing your CV, preparing for interviews and refining your job search strategy.

Use the support available to you, stay proactive and trust that the effort you’ve put in during your time at Íæż½ã½ã will open doors.

Íæż½ã½ã gave me confidence

After graduating from Íæż½ã½ã I went on to complete a master’s in European Studies at KU Leuven in Belgium. I then worked in Brussels for a political consultancy, interacting with the various EU institutions. I then made the move to London, where I now live and work with a continued focus on EU affairs.

Looking back, I’m most proud of having built an international career path and successfully navigating opportunities across different countries. My time at Íæż½ã½ã provided the foundation for the past six years of my life, giving me the confidence to pursue opportunities beyond the UK.
